Bankhead Family Place invites parents and children to attend a unique preschool program experience. Bankhead is where children have the opportunity to play and learn with their parents alongside skilled Early Childhood Educators and where parents can play, gain information, observe, share skills and laugh, all in the company of other families.

Bridge Youth and Family Services (The)- Giggles and Hugs
Parent education and support groups for moms, dads and their children ages 0-2 years of age. Siblings are welcome. Enjoy songs and rhymes with your child as well as fun group activities and/or discussion. Free quality child care and snacks.
All groups are co-facilitated by a Parent Support Facilitator from The Bridge Youth & Family Serivces and a Public Health Nurse from Interior Health Authority.

Bridge Youth and Family Services (The)- Parenting Young Children
Parenting Young Children is a 7 session course based on Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP)
Course topics include:
# Understanding young children and their behaviour Positive communication
# Building self-esteem
# Helping children learn to cooperate
# Effective discipline
# Nurturing emotional and social development
This course is specifically designed for parents of children age 5 and under.
Meeting Format: Workshop
Special Requirements: The Bridge Youth & Family Services provides parenting courses for all parents/caregivers. Courses offered throughout the year and fees vary depending on the length of the course. Some courses require Textbooks resulting in additional costs.
Bridge Youth and Family Services (The)- Tots Making Tracks
A parent education and support group for parents or caregivers and their children ages 2-4 years of age. A qualified group facilitator and Early Childhood Educator lead parents and their children in song and rhyme time, interactive play, group activities and/or discussion for parents.
Quality child care and a light, nutritious meal provided at no cost.
Creating Capable and Confident Children
Supporting parents and child-care providers alike in "Raising Respectful, Resourceful and Responsible Children", Occupational Therapist, Teresa Bouchard, shares practical parenting tools, positive discipline strategies, and techniques that enhance healthy relationships. Food Safe Level 1 (Kelowna)
Foodsafe is a food safety course targeted for food handlers including child care providers and volunteers. This course is a prerequisite for the Okanagan College Early Childhood Educator and Health Care courses. It explains how food bourne illness is caused and most importantly, how food bourne illness can be prevented. The Level 1 course emphasizes the top 10 improper practices that cause food bourne illness plus the top six job hazards in serving and preparing food.
As per the Food Premises Regulation, one person per shift must have a food safe certificate.

Making Connections
Once a week parents and children gather together for a fun learning experience which includes a half hour music class for 0-5 year olds and their parent(s) followed by a parent only discussion group to be enjoyed while children are supervised in an adjoining room. Although the venue is donated by First United Church, the program is not religious based.
An interactive music program is led by a certified Early Childhood Music Specialists. Parents and children share a special bonding time together through fingerplays, rhymes, songs, and playing instruments. Through music, children: increase gross and fine motor skills, enhance speech and vocabulary, experience a sense of belonging, learn to contribute to a group and listen to others, build confidence in themselves. Childminding after music class includes supervised playtime, a snack, story time, and a craft.
Parent group discussions are on a variety of topics such as parenting challenges and include videos and discussions facilitated by members of the group. Guest speakers are also brought in such as community nutritionist on infant and toddler nutrition, public health nurse on child health related topics, ICBC child car seat safety, dental hygiene for young children, etc...
Nobody's Perfect
The program is designed to meet the needs of parents with limited income, limited education or are socially, culturally, geographically isolated. The program includes: learning how to understand your child better, information on children's health, safety and behavior, coping with stress, sharing ideas, tips and experiences and how to take a break in your busy day. Childcare, transportation and healthy snacks are provided
Nursing Support Services
A community based program for children with special health care needs and are living at home and or attending school or childcare settings. Nursing supports include: teaching caregivers how to provide special health related aspects of a child's care, direct nursing care, assessment for at home program benefits. Anyone can refer a child to the service.

Okanagan College Prenatal Education - Complete Series
The objective of our Prenatal program is to enable the mother-to-be and her partner to acquire the essential knowledge supportive of a healthy pregnancy, as well as the practical skills so important to a positive childbirth experience, and early care
of the new baby. Our childbirth educators work in partnerships
with the client, health professionals and the community. As soon as pregnancy is confirmed, we encourage expectant parents to enroll in the appropriate prenatal program. Please

Okanagan College Red Cross Emergency First Aid for Children and CPR B
This eight hour course is a must for all parents, teachers and babysitters. This course includes procedures for dealing with a choking child, infant and child cardiopulmonary resuscitation and emergency care of the conscious and unconscious infant. Safety measures for the home will be discussed as well as other first aid basics. red Cross certification granted upon sucessful completion of course.

St. John Ambulance - Emergency First Aid - Child Care
This 8 hour National Certification course is approved for Child Care and Day Care Workers. The content of this course is oriented to performing First Aid on newborn infants to children eight years of age. There is approximately 3 hours homework to complete prior to this course. There is an ongoing skills, evaluation and a multiple choice test at the end of the course. Upon successful completion, candidates will be issued a National St. John Ambulance Emergency First Aid-Child Care Certificate valid for 3 years. Cost is $89.00 + gst (2008)
